Special years 4th edition

È curioso come si trovi il tempo di fermarsi a tirare le somme alla fine dell’anno e non, per esempio, a settembre. Natale e l’avvicinarsi del “Nuovo Anno” portano probabilmente un sentimento di “arrivo” che presuppone poi una nuova “partenza”. Come se ci fosse un traguardo o una linea da attraversare. Sebbene cada anch’io in questa trappola temporale, sono contento di non vedere il traguardo o la linea da attraversare ma un fiume che scorre e che trasporta delle belle cose in avanti.

Sono passati altri due anni, altre due stagioni in un rincorrersi di giorni, di settimane e di mesi. È di nuovo tutto diverso, il mondo si muove più velocemente di noi e modifica l’ambiente in cui agiamo. Eppure ci sono dei pilastri che il mondo sembra incapace di muovere, di cambiare. È quello in cui crediamo, e più forte ci crediamo più le radici diventano profonde.

We arrive at the end of the year to take stock of what we did, and it looks a little odd: why don’t we do in September for example? I think Christmas and the incoming new year probably bring a feeling of “point of arrival” that drives to a new “beginning”, like there was a finish line or a border to cross. I too fall into this temporal trap, but on the other hand I’m still happy because I do not see that finish line to cross, I see instead a flowing river transporting ahead so many great things.
I told in “Special years”, click here if you like to read it again, from where this river origins (vary important, never forget the origins). Two more years has passed, two more seasons, days after day, week after week, month after month. It’s now again all different, as the World run much faster than us changing the environment we act in. Anyway there are many milestones the World looks unable to change: these are what we believe in, and stronger we believe, bigger roots we are making.

Ci sono molti modi di concepire come un’attività possa muoversi e svilupparsi, e incrociare diversi punti di vista, preferenze o diversi modi di immaginare il futuro è il bello dell’Essere Umano (e anche dell’essere umani) perché ci apre verso una crescita continua. Non conta l’età, non conta cosa facciamo e non contano i nostri sogni o ambizioni: conta la volontà di credere e il piacere di crescere. “Nothing else matters” per dirla come i Metallica.
Sono molto affascinato da quello che si chiama il gioco infinito, e sono anche molto felice di aver trovato un ambiente nel mondo della Vela dove poter provare a mettere in pratica questo concetto. Simon Sinek descrive tutto ciò in un libro molto interessante The Infinite Game (*). Parla della differenza tra migliore e migliorare: sembrano due cose simili ma alla fine si arriva a comprendere la grande differenza tra le due cose.

We can conceive the way an activity would develop and move in several manner, and cross the different point of view, preferences or the way to imagine the future is the good part of Human Being (and also of being humans) as it’s opening the door for a continuous growth, it’s not a matter of age, it’s not a matter of what we do and not a matter of our dreams and ambitions: what really matter is willing to believe and the pleasure to grow. “Nothing else matters” to quote Metallica.
One thing appealing me a lot is the infinite game, and I’m so happy to have found a place in the Sailing Community where we can experiment it. Simon Sinek describes this concept well in the book “The Infinite Game” (*), a very interesting reading, He speaks about the difference between best and better: two things that seem very close but in realty are much more distant than we can imagine.

Il modo con cui ci misuriamo ha un qualcosa di “speciale” che ci permette di muovere molta energia e molta attività. Questo modo permette anche di mantenere saldi i valori su cui questa storia è nata e si basa, e i propositi a cui ci ispiriamo per muoverci in avanti. Lavorare in trasparenza, in condivisione e serenità permette anche di sviluppare un clima di fiducia e di squadra. Valori che non sempre si manifestano completamente ma che comunque sono un tesoro da preservare e qualcosa per cui combattere. In più tutto ciò non rappresenta una legge o una regola, ma semplicemente il “perché” che ci muove, o meglio che ci tira in avanti ed è solo uno dei tanti modi di approcciare un’organizzazione, che nulla vieta di cambiare quando valori, propositi e obiettivi diventano differenti.

We’re used to measure ourselves in something we can define “special” and this allow us to create and move lot of energy and activity. This way also allows to keep well steady the values this story is born from and especially is based on. Working with transparence, in a sharing and serene mood, also permits us to develop an environment based on trust and team. Sometimes these values don’t fully perform for various reasons, but are definitely a treasure to preserve, and to fight for. More than that, this is not representing a rule or a law, it is simply the “way” moving us, or better that pull us and it’s one of the several modes to approach the matter, and nothing prevent to change when values, purposes or targets would become different.

Se oggi siamo .. no, senza se .. Oggi siamo qualche miglio avanti a dove eravamo ai tempi di “Special Years”, e lo dobbiamo alla capacità che abbiamo avuto di tenerci ancorati a valori e propositi: abbiamo creduto. SanBàrt (**) crede in quello che facciamo e mette a disposizione molte risorse stimolando a fare ancora di più e a migliorare. I genitori dimostrano di crederci con tutti i sacrifici fatti per permettere ai ragazzi di “crescere con il mare”. I nostri ragazzi: per loro è più difficile vedere veramente cosa sta accadendo, ma vanno avanti perché percepiscono che sono dentro a qualcosa di speciale. A loro faccio un augurio SUPERspeciale: andate avanti e seguite la strada che più vi è congeniale, continuate ad amare la Vela come fate ora perché questo è il punto, è una questione d’Amore (e non di risultati, non smetterò mai di sottolinearlo).

If today are .. no, without if .. Today we are some miles ahead of where we were at “Special Years” time, and we owe this to the to the capacity we had to stay anchored to values and purposes: we are believers. SanBàrt (**) believes in what we do and gives resources to stimulate more passion and more growth. Parents, you show to believe through all the sacrifice you do to have your kids “growing with the Ocean”. And our sailors: it is not really easy for them to see what it is happening around, but they clearly perceive they are in something special. I’m wishing them to go further following their most fitting path, and to continue in love Sailing as they are currently doing because this is the point: it’s a matter of Love (and not of results, I’ll never be tired to repeat it).

Il quarto Special Year vorrei dedicarlo agli istruttori: nel 2023 abbiamo passato in mare la bellezza di quasi 150 giornate .. con il prezioso contributo in tempo di voi tutti secondo le vostre disponibilità abbiamo permesso un’attività continua ed efficace, non ancora “infinita” 😀 ma di tutto rispetto. GRAZIE! E per enfatizzare la magnitudo di questa attività, considerando che mediamente siamo stati in acqua in tre, ricordiamoci che abbiamo fatto ben più di un anno di Vela!! Non male eh?!

I want to dedicate this fourth Special Year to all sailing instructors: during to 2023 we spent a cool 150 days at sea .. with your precious contribute of time depending or your availability, we have permitted a continuous and efficient activity, not yet “infinite” 😀 but impressive and remarkable. THANK YOU! To emphasize even more the magnitude of this, keep in mind we were averagely 3 instructors at sea, that means much more than 1 year of sailing!! Not too bad, isn’t it?

Passion for Sailing is a legacy we transfer and transmit every time we hoist a mainsail. When the Passion is above all other things, then we are sure we contributed to have shaped a new generation of Sailors.
